Pasta e Fagioli is loaded with ground chicken, vegetables, pasta, beans, and delicious herbs to make this hearty and filling Italian soup which is so much better than Olive Garden.

Pasta fagioli is often called a peasant dish, as it has simple ingredients like pasta, beans, and vegetables. Adding meat is optional, you can add ground beef or chicken as per your choice.

What is pasta e fagioli soup? What does pasta e fagioli mean in English?

Pasta e fagioli simply means "pasta and beans".  It is also called pasta fagioli, pasta fazool - simple yet flavourful soup with chicken, beans, short pasta, and delicious flavors.

The ingredients are pretty basic and which you will always find in your pantry, plus adding ground chicken or beef is optional. You can enjoy this classic soup with beans, pasta, and vegetables too.

The ingredients that go in making this Olive Garden copycat pasta fagioli are very easy to have in your pantry:
  •  Ground chicken/beef
  • Onion
  • Carrot
  • Celery
  • Garlic
  • Peeled Tomatoes, canned
  • Tomato paste
  • Chicken / Vegetable broth
  • Cannelini beans, canned
  • Dried Thyme
  • Dried Oregano
  • Dried Basil
  • Sugar
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Any short pasta/ Ditalini / small Shell pasta
  • Red Chili flakes
  • Parsley
  • Parmesan Cheese, grated

How to make pasta Fagioli soup?

Step1:  In a dutch oven, add oil. When the oil is hot, add garlic, onion, carrot, and celery. Saute the vegetables over medium heat until they are tender.

Step2:  Add tomato paste, peeled tomatoes, chicken, spices, sugar, salt, pepper, red chili flakes and saute for 5 mins.

Step3:  To the pot add stock and mix well. Cover and cook for 15mins on medium heat.

Step4:   Add pasta and stir well.Cover and cook for another 10mins. Once you see the pasta is cooked tender, take the pot off the heat. Serve with chopped parsley and grated parmesan.

Can you freeze pasta e fagioli?

Yes! You can store the soup in an airtight and freezer-safe container, leaving some space for the liquid to expand at the top of the container. Store up to a month for best taste results.

You can store the soup in the refrigerator for up to 5days.

You can store it even in individual portions. Thaw in the refrigerator before heating the soup.

If you are planning to store the soup then cooking pasta in the soup is not advisable. As the pasta will absorb the liquid, the best would be to cook the pasta separately and cook soup separately and store it in separate containers. While heating you can add pasta to soup, heat thoroughly, and serve.

What goes with / sides for pasta e fagioli soup?

You can serve this soup with a side of crusty bread, cheese garlic bread, kale salad.

Tip's to make pasta e fagioli soup recipe:

  • If you are planning to store the soup then skip adding pasta to the soup at the time of cooking, rather cook the pasta separately and add when you are heating the soup.
  • To reheat soup either microwave the soup or simmer on the stovetop.
  • To make the soup dairy-free, skip the cheese.
  • To make the soup gluten-free, add gluten-free pasta to this dish.
  •  To make the soup thick you can blend some beans and vegetables in a blender and add them back to the soup.
