Why are they called street tacos?
Street tacos are meant to be smaller than regular tacos,so basically they are served as snack than a meal. They are made with corn tortilla and served basically to street travellers so the word "street taco".They are basically two tacos stacked served with meat, chicken grilled or shredded along with toppings like chopped onion,chili,cilantro.
The idea behind stacking two tortilla is that with filling in taco the tortilla might break or tear so the second tortilla holds the taco together.

What goes in chicken street tacos?
Things that make up these delicious street tacos are as follows:
- Mexican Shredded Chicken: This is easy one pot chicken make with some chicken breast,spices,crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chipotle pepper in adobo sauce,all mixed together and further cooked and shredded.
- Corn Tortilla/ Flour Tortilla: You can use either of these as per your personal choice.
- Toppings: Chopped Onion/ Tomato,diced avocado,chopped cilantro,sour cream,shredded cheese.
What kind of cheese for chicken street tacos recipe?
You can use whatever cheese you have in your hand but in this recipe I have used shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar.
What toppings can I use in making street tacos?
Some of the toppings that might interest you are:
- Chopped Onion
- Chopped Tomato
- Your choice of Salsa or Pico de gallo
- Guacamole or sliced avocados
- Sour cream
- Shredded cheese
How to make shredded chicken street tacos?
Step1: In a pot/pan,add the spice powder (oregano, salt, paprika, cayenne, cumin powder, pepper powder, onion and garlic powders, sugar).
Next add tomato paste,crushed tomatoes,olive oil,chicken stock,chipotle pepper and mix well.
Step2: How to make mexican shredded chicken?
Add chicken to the pot(here i have used boneless/skinless chicken breast,but you can use chicken thighs too).
Toss the chicken around in the pan to get the chicken coated well with sauce.
Keep the pot covered on medium to low heat and let the chicken cook.
Keep an eye on chicken at intervals to make sure that sauce is not getting dried quickly.If that is the case then reduce the heat.
Step3: Best way to shred chicken?
Once the chicken is cooked ,switch off the heat and let it cool off for some time.
With a pair of forks or hand mixer ,shred the chicken in the pot itself. Alternatively you can empty the cooled chicken along with sauce in a mixer grinder and pulse for some time till the chicken is shredded.
Mix the chicken shredded well with the sauce.
Step4: Heat the tortilla on skillet or directly on flame,arrange the tortilla(you can stack two tortilla together), add the chicken along with juice,chopped onion and tomato,sour cream,shredded cheese,chopped cilantro.
Pro tips to make chicken street tacos:
- Cooking chicken in a pot/pan covered,make sure to check on the chicken after regular intervals or else the chicken might burn and get stuck to the pot.
- Always watch for sauce content left in the pot.If you feel that sauce is very less then add a little bit more of stock.
- Cook the chicken on low to medium heat,as high heat will cook the chicken fast and all the sauce will dry out,but we need sauce along with chicken.
- You can use crockpot or even instant pot to make this shredded chicken. I have not shared steps to make the mexican chicken in these appliances but if you are using them at your home and you can as well give a try.
- Use your choice of toppings too.Whatever you have at home ,you can try,there is no rule to use exact same toppings used in this recipe.
- If you have lot of sauce left in the pan along with chicken then try using two tortilla stacked together to make the taco.As if there is good amount of sauce in one taco then chances are that the tortilla might break but the second tortilla will still hold the taco together.
- The authentic street tacos use corn tortilla,but you can even use flour tortilla.
- To shred chicken use a pair of forks or hand mixer too. Even pouring the whole cooled chicken along with sauce in a mixer grinder and just pulsing it in mixer grinder will do the trick.Make sure the chicken has cooled down before shredding.

For mexican shredded chicken:
- 1 Chicken Breast,boneless,skinless
- 1/2 cup Crushed Tomatoes
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1/4 cup Tomato Paste
- 1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper
- 1.5 tsp Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper Powder
- 1/2 tsp Oregano,dried
- 1/2 tsp Cumin Powder
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1/2 Cup Chicken Stock
- 1 Chipotle Pepper in Adobo Sauce

For Serving Street Tacos:
- 6 Corn/Flour Tortilla
- Chopped Onion
- Chopped Tomato
- Lime Wedges
- Chopped Cilantro
- Shredded Mozzarella and Sharp Cheddar
