FAQ's

What kind of noodles are in Lo Mein?

The noodles used in Lo Mein are Egg Noodles. Normally lo mein egg noodles are thick, round and chewy instead of thin, flat and fried one's like how used in Chowmien.

For this recipe I could not find the round lo mein noodles so settled with flat egg noodles.

You can try getting them from the closest Asian Stores near you as they have pretty many options available to choose from.

What is Lo Mein sauce made of?

The lo mein sauce recipe is slightly different than one I have shared in Chicken Lo Mein recipe.

It is made of following ingredients: sesame oil, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, water, white vinegar, black pepper and sriracha.

What is the difference between Lo Mein and Chow Mein?

Chow mein is mostly prepared with thin and fried noodles and in Lo Mein the noodles are slightly thick and chewy.

Lo Mein the noodles are cooked/boiled in water then tossed along with vegetables, proteins and sauces to be served, whereas in Chow mein the noodles are stir-fried.

What vegetables can I use?

You can add following vegetables:

Red and Green Bell Peppers
Broccoli
Snow Peas
Sliced Onions
Sliced Carrots
Sliced Cabbage
Zucchini
Scallion / Spring Onion

Tip's to make easy Shrimp Lo Mein

  • Check the instruction for the type of lo mein noodles you are using. Some noodles do not need boiling so cook the noodles as per instructions.

  • Toss the ingredients on high heat to get the restaurant style flavor and texture for the final dish.

  • Use fresh shrimp which are medium in size,as small shrimp will curl up when cooking and get very tiny in the dish.

    1. Followed the recipe but doubled the sauce, omitted the eggs and added corn starch to thicken. It was yummy!
