Crispy Honey Chicken

What is Honey Chicken?

Honey chicken is a Chinese takeout dish served in famous restaurants like P.F.Chang's. It is effortless to make this restaurant-style dish, and kids will love this.

Ingredients

  • Puffy Batter (batter for frying) -  This batter recipe to fry the chicken is ideal, and puffy, and will make the most crispy fried chicken, which won't moisten the chicken pieces soon once fried.

  • Chicken Marinade - I have used chicken breast for this recipe. You can also use chicken thighs, as they are juicier than chicken breast meat. But breast meat works well too.  To add flavor to the chicken add soy sauce (light), salt, and sriracha.

  • Honey Sauce - This honey sauce recipe is easy and very sticky and coats the chicken so well, keeping the chicken crispy for long without soaking up the sauce.

How To Make Honey Chicken?

Step 1:  Marinate the chicken. Add dry and clean chicken pieces in a bowl, add salt, soy sauce, and sriracha, and mix well.

Add cornstarch and toss the chicken pieces so the chicken is coated well with cornstarch. Refrigerate the chicken till it's ready to be fried.

Step 2:  In a mixing bowl/cup, add all the ingredients for the honey sauce, mix well, and keep aside.

Step 3:  Prepare the batter for frying the chicken. Add all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then add egg and mix slowly.
Slowly add club soda (chilled) and mix softly to make the batter(do not mix the batter vigorously).

Step 4:  Heat oil in a deep frying pan, dip the chicken pieces in batter, and fry them in batches until they are golden and the chicken is thoroughly fried.

Drain the chicken on the rack or a paper towel on a plate. You can double-fry the chicken to make it crispier.

Alternatively, keep all the fried chicken pieces in a heated oven to keep them hot and crispy till you prepare the sauce.

Step 5:  Add the sauce mix to the saucepan and let it bubble. Once the sauce bubbles up, reduce the heat and let it simmer.

Add chicken pieces to the pan and coat the chicken pieces evenly with the sauce.

Tips To Make Honey Crispy Chicken:
  • Use chicken breast meat in this recipe and cut it into 1" pieces, as smaller pieces will be difficult to handle while frying.
  • To get the puffy batter, add chilled club soda or chilled water to make the batter. When the chilled batter hits the hot oil, the fried chicken will be fried with crispy edges.
  • This recipe does not have any nutritional value but once in a while eating something with calories is fine.
  • Reheating chicken with sauce in the microwave will make the chicken soggy, so to keep the crispiness intact to a certain extent it is better to bake the chicken in the oven.
