Pyaaz ka Bharta / Onion Bharta

A new dish but not sweet this time...but awesome finger licking good...Pyaaz Ka Bharta / Onion Bharta!!

I was running short of ideas for veggie day...didn't have any idea what to cook...was fed up of most of veggie dishes and didn't want to cook the normal dal-rice combo's.
I had by mistake ordered lot of onions in my grocery last thought of making something out of onions...and Voila!!...came up with this Onion Bharta and it was really good!!

Whenever I run out of food ideas and whatever I made turns out surprisingly awesome and my family who is BIG "NO" for veggie food also loved no problem for me in making it again next time!!

Onion BHarta Pyaaz ka Bharta Indian Vegetarian


Pyaaz Ka Bharta / Onion Bharta
  • 4 Medium Onions, peeled and cut into cubes(Try to separate,each petal of each cube)
  • Salt as per taste
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Black pepper Powder
  • 1 & 1/2 Tablespoon Chilli Garlic Sauce
  • 1 Teaspoon Soy Sauce
  • 1 Medium Tomato,chopped finely
  • 3/4th Teaspoon Sugar
  • a Fistful Grated Coconut
  • 2 small Green Chillies ,chopped finely
  • 4 Sprigs Cilantro,chopped
First peel the onions and cut them in cubes.
Marinate the onions with salt,black pepper powder,chilli garlic sauce and soy sauce.
Keep it aside for 1 hour.
Now, on a tava spread little oil and place all the marinated onion pieces and on medium heat fry it.
Alternatively,put all onion pieces on skewers and keep them on direct flame.
Cook the onions till all the onion petals loosen and they are cooked well.
Mostly keep the onions stirred on the tava ill the outer skin is charred or slightly burnt.
Now let it cool.
In a bowl,mix the cooked onion,tomato,salt,sugar,cilantro,grated coconut,green chillies.
Mesh well with your hands,so that the charred flavour of onions gets mixed well with all other ingredients.
Serve with hot phulkas or roti.

  • You can alternatively put the onions in skewers and grill in oven too.
  • Try adding turmeric powder,garlic or garam masala powder as per choice.
