Ragi (Finger Millet) Vermicelli Upma

A new breakfast idea...Ragi Vermicelli Upma! A quick fix dish...no hassles...and a very healthy one!

Last week,I stumbled on this Ragi Vermicelli, I had never tried before and thought of giving it a try.

Ragi as it is,is very healthy and for those who don't have it much in their diet, then best way to consume it by making ragi dosas,ragi flour adding to chapati flour and so on.Mostly we prepare sweet versions of Ragi, such as having it in milk or pudding, but not much in spicy form.

Ragi vermicelli can be another best option to consume ragi and that too in a spicy form.
I tried making spicy upma for breakfast and loved it.

Ragi (Finger Millet) Vermicelli Upma
Ingredients
  • 1/2 Cup (Any brand would do) Ragi Vermicelli
  • 1 Tablespoon Ghee / Clarified Butter
  • 2 Sprigs Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 4 Byadgi Chillies,broken
  • 1 Tablespoon Mung Dal,split
  • as per taste Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 3 Cups Water
  • 1 Teaspoon Oil
  • 1 Small Tomato,finely chopped
  • 2 Sprigs Cilantro,choped
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • a Fistful Grated Coconut
Instructions
In a pan,add 3 cups of water,little salt and oil and let it boil. When it starts boiling add the vermicelli and let it cook.
Cook for 1 & 1/2 to 2 Minutes max. DO not cook more than 2 minutes as it will get soggy.
Drain it and drain again with cold water. Add little oil to it and mix well. Keep aside.
In a pan,add ghee,when its hot,add asafoetida,cumin seeds,mustard seeds,curry leaves,broken byadgi chillies,mung dal split and mix well.
Let it cook for some time.When mustard seeds starts to crackle,add finely chopped tomato,and mix well.
Add little salt and mix well.
Cook till tomato is mushy.
Now add turmeric powder,sugar and salt as per your need.
Remember you have already added salt before.
Now add vermicelli ,grated coconut,cilantro and mix well.
Sprinkle little water with hand on this vermicelli.
Now bring the gas to sim,close the pan with lid and keep for 1 minute.
Switch off gas and cover the pan and let it sit for another 1 min before serving.
Enjoy upma with hot tea!!

Tips:

  • Any brand of vermicelli should work.
  • Do not cook vermicelli for more than 2 minutes.
  • Sprinkle little water on vermicelli at end would keep them moist.
