Making pita bread at home is now a breeze,whenever you crave for some mediterranean food,just put together these few basic ingredients and make the fluffy,authentic pita bread at home and enjoy with hummus or make gyro or just a sandwich and enjoy.




What is pita bread used for?

Pita bread can be used in variety of ways. You can make pita chips,cut the pita bread into small chips and bake them till done.


Another way to enjoy pita is by making sandwich of falafel or any stuffing you wish.

Make also some grilled chicken gyros or shawarma chicken stuffed gyros along with tzatziki sauce.

How to reheat homemade pita bread?

If you want to reheat your pita then you can heat cast iron pan/griddle and apply some olive oil and toast it for some time till is warm.


Another option is to place the pita bread in batches on a baking tray and warm them in oven till they are heated well.





What is the difference between Naan and Pita bread?

Naan and pita bread are different in terms of ingredients and similar in terms of uses.


Naan is Indian flatbread which is made with all purpose flour,butter,yogurt,salt and optionally be adding whey,which further toasted and cooked on a grilled/pan on stove top or even in tandoor or oven. 



Pita bread is made with whole wheat(traditionally),optionally adding all purpose flour,salt,yeast and further cooked on grilled/stovetop or in oven too.

How do you make pita bread from scratch? / How to make pita bread recipe?



Step1:   In a bowl add warm water(110 F),salt,sugar and yeast and mix well. Cover and keep aside for the yeast bloom. This will take around 10 mins.



Step2:   When the yeast has bloomed,you will see the water mix is frothed up. Add to this wheat flour,all purpose flour,olive oil and knead well till the dough comes well together.



Make sure this dough is not tough or hard. Add in extra olive oil to make this soft.



Cover with a plastic wrap or with lid and keep aside for the dough to double in size.(This takes around 1 hr)

Step3:    Punch down the dough and knead again for some time. 

Make equal sized dough balls and roll each disc around 6 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick.


Keep each disc covered for next 15 mins to puff.

Step4:    (For using stovetop/skillet)

Apply olive oil and spread on a skillet(cast iron preferably) with help of a brush or kitchen tissue and heat the skillet.


When the skillet is hot,invert each puffed rolled disc on the skillet(be careful with hot skillet/make sure you do not touch the skillet).


The pita bread will start puffing and get bubbles, turn the pita bread after a few seconds and slightly press with spatula to help the pockets to form.


Step4:   (For using Oven)


Heat oven at 425 f / 218 c and preheat the baking stone(if you are having) or baking tray  for 10 mins.


Invert each disc on the baking stone or tray , keeping some space in between each disc.


Bake for 5 to 6 mins till the pockets are well formed.(Be careful with hot oven and stone/tray when handling the pita bread)

Can you freeze homemade pita bread?

You can plate the pita bread in a aluminum foil and place it in freezer bag to keep it safe from getting ice on it.

These homemade pita bread will last upto one month after freezing.



To reheat, first thaw the package of pita bread from your freezer directly on kitchen counter. After a while reheat in microwave till heated all the way through.




How long will a homemade pita bread last?

To store pita bread at room temperature ,place them wrapped around a calen,dry kitchen cloth and further packed in a box. This will make the pita stay good upto 5 to 7 days.


If you want to freeze the pita so that they stay well for longer then freeze them,packed inside aluminum foil and further in a freezing bag.This should keep the pita good for almost about a month.

To get the perfect puff you will need few things to get right: 


  1. Make sure if you baking then the oven should be very hot when you are placing the dough discs to bake.(425f/218c)
  2. Make sure the baking sheet or baking stone is hot too.
  3. If you are using griddle/pan/skillet then the skillet also has to be very hot when you place the rolled discs.
  4. Make sure you place the pita rolled on the baking stone or skillet such that its inverted.That is the surface of rolled pita,with surface facing up should be down on the baking stone/sheet and surface of rolled pita which was down should be facing up.
  5. DO NOT roll the pita very very thin or you will end up with crispy pita bread.
  6. To get pockets make sure you roll them at least 1/4 inch thick and around 6 inch in diameter.
  7. After rolling you have to let the rolled discs rest for 15 to 20 mins to get them puffed slightly before you cook them.


Even if you do not get the right puff,well who cares right! These pita will taste so good,economical and better than store bought!

  • 1.5 Tbsp Instant Yeast
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Cup Warm Water(110 F)
