A new post after a while, this time again a tea-time snack to munch-on, also a good fasting recipe,an easy recipe to keep kids busy....Batata Chivda/ Potato Chevda!

This chivda is my favorite since childhood. I loved having this as its sweet plus has a occasional spicy bite to it.
This is a very good snack for kids as its not spicy but sweet, also crunchy potatoes give a nice taste  to it along with spicy chili gives a nice kick in taste.
Batata chivda or also called as Potato chevdo is a very good fasting recipe.
This is a very good fasting recipe as this chivda can be enjoyed even when you are observing fast on religious days.

Potato Chevda Farali Recipe

I remember, when I was small my Dad used to bring this often as I used to like this so much. Thought of trying this many times before but since my list of recipes to make was so big (and it's still) that I had to keep on postponing it.
Finally I happen to make it and trust me it got over in 2 hours! I had no idea that It would be such a big hit at home that everyone would finish it in no time.
In the recipe I have used cashew nuts, black raisins, coconut pieces, peanuts but choice is yours. You an try and add any combination of things you want to add to this recipe.
I added these as I was used to eating it this way and did not want to change that. But again, possibilities are endless and you can add any crunchy snack you want to add to this and enjoy.

  • 1/4th Cup Cashewnut,halved
  • 1/4th Cup - 1 Tablespoon Groundnuts / Peanuts
  • 1/4th Cup - 1 Tablespoon Coconut Slices,1/2 " piece
  • 1/4th Cup Sultanas
Instructions
Firstly to begin, wash the potatoes, peel them.
Then finely chop them into long strips, thinner strips.
Make sure each strip is around 1" (Inch) long.
You can use a grater with bigger holes too.
Soak the potato strips in water for 1/2 hour.
Wash the potato strips twice so that all the starch is washed away.
Dry them on the kitchen towel.
Heat oil in a deep frying pan.
When its hot, drop the potato strips in batches in hot oil and fry them with slotted spoon.
Once they are about 50% cooked, then reduce the flame to sim.
Let them fry for the rest of the time on sim.
Keep turning the strips till they are golden brown.
Take care not to burn them.
Keep frying them it you hear a crunch when turning them.
When you hear a crunchy sound when turning them that means they are done.
Carefully drain them on tissue paper.
When all the potato strips are fried.
Then to the same oil,add all the ingredients mentioned such as coconut slices, peanuts, curry leaves, cashewnuts and green chilies.
Fry them on a medium flame till they are brownish and fragrant.
Drain them on absorbent paper.
Mix all the fried ingredients.
Add salt and sugar.

Toss them well so that all are mixed well.
Store this chivda in air tight container.
Enjoy this with tea!

Fasting Recipe Batata Chivda

Tips:
  • You can make potato pieces as per your choice. Try grating them using grater with big holes as it would be faster.
  • I chopped them into shorter strips as I wanted them to be firm potato strips, yet short and bite-size , easy to hold in small tiny hands :)
  • Frying the potato strips on low flame gives them perfect color and crunch.
  • Frying on low heat is a time consuming task but the chevda will last longer or the potato will go soft after a few days.
  • My next batch of chevda lasted perfect, crunchy for almost 10 days.
