Vatana Usal (Spicy Peas Curry)



A new post for all spicy curry lovers..this time it is Vatana Usal ...a spicy peas curry!

This is a very good breakfast dish...and it goes well with puri or pav/bread.
Usually in restaurants we get this usal only made of moth beans and white peas but since I didn't have moth beans at home instead I used white peas,green dry peas and some quantity of masoor.
Whatever combination of peas you use to make this curry the final outcome is superb and a good way to consume variety of beans.

Try this recipe and your family will love this...specially very nice way to introduce the beans in a spicy way to kids...theyW will love it!

Vatana Usal (Dry Peas Usal)
Ingredients
  • 1/4th Cup Dry White Peas ( Vatana)
  • 1/4th Cup Dry Green Peas
  • 1/4th Cup -2 Tablespoons Masoor,Whole/Sabut
  • Oil as per need
  • Salt as per need
  • 1 Small Onion,finely chopped
  • 1 Small Tomato,finely chopped
  • For Masala:
  • Oil as per need
  • 1 Small Onion,long cut
  • 1 Small Tomato,cubed
  • 2 Tablespoons Grated Coconut
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Carom Seeds
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Teaspoon Coriander Seeds
  • 2 Byadgi Chilies
  • 4 Garlic cloves
  • 1" piece Ginger
  • 1 Teaspoon Fennel Seeds
  • 1 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • Salt as per need
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Sugar
  • 1/2 Teasoon Kanda Lasun Masala
  • 1 Tablespoon Misal Masala
  • 2 Sprigs Cilantro,finely chopped
Instructions
First,wash the peas and masoor and soak them in water overnight.
In a pressure cooker,add 2 tablespoons oil.
When its hot,add onion and tomato.
Fry it for a while.
Do this till onion turns pink.
Add the soaked peas mix.
To this add 1 & 1/2 Cup water and pressure cook it for 7 whistles.
You can try and keep for more or less time depending on how much time it takes for you to cook it thoroughly.
Next.make the masala.
In a wide pan,add oil.
When its hot,add onion and cubed tomato and rest other ingredients mentioned under "For Masala",except the dry powders.
Fry this till coconut turns brown and fragrant.
Switch off the gas and let this cool.
When cooled ,grind this to a smooth paste.
Do not make it watery.
When thhe pressure cooker steam has released completely,open the cooker and add the ground paste to it.
Also,add all the masala powders mentioned.
Adjust salt.
Add sugar.
Let it cook for a while.
Garnish with cilantro.
Serve hot with Poori or Bread!

Tips:
  • Adjust spice level as per your tolerance.
  • If you cannot find the misal masala powder then no problem try using malvani masal or even any brand of garam masala combined with coriander powder.
  • Kanda lasun masala gives a nice aroma to any maharashtrian gravy...so try if you can find it or else skip but taste might vary.
