Goan Bhakkam Peda

A new yummy post for all sweet lovers...This time a specialty of Goa...Bhakkam Peda!
This bhakkam Peda is one of Goa's famous sweets and all traditional sweet marts / sweet makers in Goa keep these bhakkam pedas in their store.

During Diwali or Ganesh Chaturthi, when we exchange sweets with our relatives and friends, these pedas are one of the special sweets that we exchange too.
Along with this we also exchange Goan Doodhpeda, try my recipe of that too.

It's my family's favorite sweet. There is one more traditional sweet that my family loves,I shall share that recipe soon.
My surprise was that these turned out to be soft and melt in mouth beyond my expectations.
I have been trying to make perfect bhakkam pedas for a long time now.
But cracking that recipe of the perfect pedas just the way we buy was a difficult task to accomplish for me.
I have tried these pedas almost 4 times now but every-time they did not turn soft and delicate ones.
But finally I could make them and was so happy!! :)
They vanished at my house in no time...so have to make once again now!

Try these pedas and enjoy!

Goan Bhakkam Peda Badusha Badushahi Festive Sweet

Goan Bhakkam Peda / Soft Dough Balls dunk in sugar syrup
  • 1 & 1/4th Cup Maida / All Purpose Flour
  • 2 Generous Pinches Baking Soda
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Yogurt
  • 4 Tablespoons Ghee / Clarified Butter
  • Enough to make a smooth, soft dough.I used around 1/4th Cup Cold Milk
  • For Sugar Syrup:
  • 3/4th Cup Water
  • 3/4th Cup Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon Rose Essence
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Lemon Juice
  • Oil / Ghee to fry
  • 10 (optional) To Garnish,sliced Pistachios
In a sauce Pan,add the water and sugar and boil it to make sugar syrup.
When the sugar has dissolved and  the syrup has reached 1 String consistency then switch off the gas.
i.e.when the sugar syrup holds to one string between your thumb and index finger.
To this add the rose essence and lime juice.
Mix well and keep aside.

In a mixing bowl, add ghee and sugar, and beat it well till the sugar dissolves.
To this add the soda and flour and mix well.
Further, add the milk and make smooth and soft dough.
Let the dough be very soft and gooey. That's the right dough consistency you should get.
If the dough gets very sticky, add little flour to it to adjust the consistency.
Now,apply little ghee to your palm, pinch a dough ball and roll it to make smooth ball.
With your thumb make a small dent / impression at the center of the ball.
Meanwhile, heat oil / ghee in a thick bottom pan / kadai.
When its hot bring the flame to medium and start frying these pedas.
Once they are golden brown, drain them and directly drop them in the sugar syrup.
Coat the peda with the sugar syrup and let it stand for 2 minutes.
Then take the pedas out of the sugar syrup and arrange on the plate.
Garnish them with sliced pistachios.
Enjoy these yummy Bhakkam Pedas !

  • You can skip the rose essence if you do not wish.
  • You can try adding Kewra essence too.
  • The lime juice is added to avoid sugar syrup crystallization.
  • Make the dough real soft, that will make the final peda melt in mouth.
  • These are best enjoyed warm.
  • Make sure the cracks in your dough ball are very slight.
  • If you drop the dough ball with lots of cracks then there is a possibility that the peda will crack open when you are frying them.

  1. Awesome......
I would like to taste it at your restaurant....
